Hayfever – or allergic rhinitus – is a common condition whereby the immune system over-reacts to allergens in the air – often pollen – causing symptoms similar to those of a cold: sneezing; itchy eyes; congestion and cough, ranging from mild to debilitating. It can affect any age and at least 1 in 5 of us will suffer symptoms at some stage in our lives.

The Western treatment of allergic rhinitus relies mostly on the use of anti-histamines, which, whilst often effective in suppressing the symptoms of hayfever may also cause unpleasant side-effects including lethargy; dizziness; nervousness and gastro-intestinal disturbance. Fortunately, there are alternatives to this approach.

Chinese herbs – prescribed here at the Clinic by Magdelena Lius – are clinically proven in boosting the immune system (protective Chi) and clearing symptoms of hayfever, whilst acupuncture’s broad application can – in the hands of Charlotte Morgan – also help to alleviate them.

Modern science would explain it thus: that these traditional Chinese medicines stimulate the nervous system to release chemicals in the body that influence the body’s own internal regulating system. This improved energy and biochemical balance triggers the body’s natural healing abilities. It can also help to strengthen the body’s resistance and regulate its antigen-antibody’s reactions which is important in helping to relieve hayfever and other allergic reactions such as asthma.
