Did you know, that in Chinese Medicine the ear represents a tiny map of the whole body?

Acupuncturist Kevin Towell, talks about his recent training in an effective style of Ear (Auricular) Acupuncture.

– The NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association) Protocol –

Recently I completed a NADA protocol course at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading where I started my acupuncture journey.

Dr Michael Smith, a medical doctor at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx area of New York developed the NADA protocol in the mid-70s. Dr Smith simplified an existing model of auricular (ear) acupuncture to help recovering addicts deal with irritability and cravings. Some of the benefits of auricular acupuncture are feelings of calmness and relaxation that often can occur within minutes of receiving treatment. The procedure is effective and simple due to its standardised, non-diagnostic nature.

Five small, sterile, stainless steel disposable needles are placed at specific places on the outer surface of a person’s ear for up to 40 minutes. This combination of points can help foster a calm, relaxed meditative state in patients. It has been well documented that one particular point within the NADA protocol Shen Men or ‘Spirit Gate’ has the effect to cause feelings of relaxation and tranquility. Shen Men is categorised as one of the 10 Master Points in auricular acupuncture; given that title due to the active calming effect it has on the majority of patients who are treated by it.

Over time uses of the NADA protocol have broadened to include panic disorders, anxiety, depression, trauma, and children with behavioral difficulties. It has also been used widely in communities treating trauma during and after major disasters.

In addition, ‘ear seeds’ (tiny balls) can be placed on the site of Shen Men – the seeds are positioned against the point and remain post-treatment; the benefit being that the patient can press the seed against the ear and so heighten the effect of the point once they have left the clinic.

This was an inspirational couple of days on the NADA course; one of the great things about continuing to learn and refine skills is re-experiencing the benefits that patients feel by having treatment. In the afternoon on the second day I received a treatment; as soon as Shen Men was inserted my body and mind became more relaxed – after about 15 minutes having the NADA protocol a sense of lightness and calmness prevailed. When the lights were turned up and the treatment (and course) was over it was another reminder of the benefits of this ancient medicine and why I started to practice acupuncture in the first place.

WATCH THIS SPACE – This summer Kevin will be running a clinic slot dedicated to the NADA protocol, where patients dealing with anxiety related disorders, or giving up addictive habits such as smoking can get quick and affordable assistance.
