What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?

CHM is an ancient but sophisticated medical system.  With its systematic approach to disease it has very effective clinical outcomes. It compromises a large proportion of the medicines prescribed in the Far East (China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea). With today’s modern technology, a massive amount of research is conducted to further raise the effectiveness, understanding and safety of CHM.

The basis for CHM functioning has its roots in the theory of Yin and Yang. It addresses imbalances depending on what channels or organs are affected. Commonly encountered imbalances will be to do with blocked Qi (energy) or blood and hypo/hyperfunctions of certain aspects of the body. Other common terms that you may hear in the clinic are dampness, wind invasion  or too much/little heat.

The beauty of the herbs is that they have a direct affinity to these channels and problems. These herbs have been carefully analysed for taste, temperature, channel/organ affinity and action.

The Chinese Herbal Material Medica consists of hundreds of ingredients carefully researched and categorised (twigs, flowers, barks, seeds, leafs). NO animal products are used and herbs are checked regularly by Kew gardens for authenticity and safety.

What to expect from Chinese Medicine treatment in Clerkenwell

Here at the clinic we have an in-house pharmacy. Prescriptions can only be obtained after a 1-to-1 thorough consultation with a qualified practitioner. Herbal prescriptions are combinations of 8-20 herbs based on traditional formulae, which are tailored to the individual.  Prescriptions are in the form of powders that are mixed in warm water and drunk as a strong (not always great tasting) tea. If the person is already receiving acupuncture from the same practitioner no separate consultation is needed.
